So getting ready to hopefully build a new comp.

I've got a GPU already (RX580)
Trying to decide if I want to stay Intel or go AMD for CPU, thoughts?

I'd say wait... You're probably sick of hearing that, but Intel is currently finally getting 8 cores to the desktop and right now it's too expensive. With their i9-9900K which finally uses the consumer socket. Just hang in there for a couple more generations until they put that SKU on i7 and i5 where it belongs.

If you really have to jump in screwdriver first right now, then AMD. Because the stutters in Star Citizen with less than 8 threads is pretty annoying, (many other games have problems with less than 8 threads, like Far Cry 5 and most other recent Ubisoft games) and the Intel i7s with 6 cores/ 12 threads are overpriced, and the only motherboards safe to run them are also over $200. (Especially steer clear of ASUS who have been dumping shit power deliveries into their boards recently, EVGA is the only one I'd recommend based on componentry)

When you say wait, is this like a couple years? Or like 6 months lol?

A year or two. Squadron 42 is out in second half of 2020 and Star Citizen will take much longer, so unless you're struggling to run more pedestrian games I wouldn't upgrade until Intel gets up to speed in core count. Star Citizen isn't being optimised for computers we have today, but computers we'll have in 3 years+.

But, like I said, if it has to be now/ soon then just go with an AMD 8-core to avoid the stutters. Just make sure the motherboard has an NVME SSD slot. If you want Intel you'll need an i7 at the least.

Edit: AMD has new CPUs out later this year, probably summer, and they'll represent a bigger improvement than the improvement between Ryzen 1xxx and 2xxx was. Intel is probably not going to have a consumer 8-core part in their next launch .

Hmm...I'd like to play SC when it comes out in 2020, but I'm not 100% sure my machine will be able to handle new games until then, I guess I can play a wait and see game at the moment lol

Didn't you get the RX 580 and overclock your CPU? Should handle anything coming out between now and then. I think you overestimate the innovation that's happened since your Sandy Bridge CPU came out, it's been iterative to say the least. If you have only 8GB of RAM that would explain if you're having performance problems as it's not enough anymore.

All I changed on my CPU at the moment was the multiplier, I won't lie, a little hesitant to change my voltage...
As for RAM, I've got 24GB or RAM (DDR3 1866)

You're sorted on RAM then. How much did you change the multiplier and is it still stable with the stock voltage? Sandy Bridge should be happy at 1.4v so there's a lot of room in between that and stock to find a sweet spot.

Changed the multiplier to 43 or 45, Havent had an issues of it shutting down in the midst of gaming....

I would guess it's 43 then, I doubt 45 is doable with stock vcore. I'd certainly try to get it to 45-47 which should still be well inside trivial voltage. Sounds like you have a really good chip too.

What is stock voltage on your motherboard?
